Cyber Security Awareness Session – 2nd October

On 2nd October, apprentices participated in an informative and engaging cyber security awareness session delivered by a Cyber Protect Officer from the Yorkshire & Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit.

The session focused on increasing awareness of online safety, cybercrime, fraud, and the potential risks individuals face when using digital platforms. Apprentices explored the importance of maintaining strong, unique passwords, changing them regularly, and using secure methods to protect personal and professional accounts. They were also reminded to exercise caution when sharing personal information online, as cybercriminals can exploit this information for fraudulent purposes.

A key area of discussion centred on financial scams and fraud prevention. Apprentices learned about tactics used by criminals to gain trust and manipulate individuals into sharing sensitive information or transferring money. The session reinforced the importance of verifying requests for personal or financial details and thinking carefully before taking action online.

The topic of money muling was also explored in depth. Apprentices gained an understanding of how criminals target young people and recruit them to transfer illegal funds through their bank accounts. The legal and financial consequences of becoming involved in money muling were highlighted, including potential criminal records, frozen bank accounts, and long-term impacts on future employment and financial services.

As part of the session, apprentices took part in an interactive cyber investigation challenge. Working collaboratively in teams, they solved clues, identified passwords, accessed digital evidence, and gathered information to prove that a fictional “boss” had been framed. This practical activity encouraged teamwork, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, while also providing insight into digital investigations and demonstrating how weak passwords can be compromised.

Overall, the session provided valuable knowledge and practical guidance to help apprentices stay safe online, recognise cyber threats, and understand the importance of responsible digital behaviour both at work and in their personal lives.
